I put together a bootable cluster CD (BCCD) based upon the linux bootable
business card project (where I'm an active developer and package
maintainer). Having recently integrated LessTif into the image, it now
supports xmpi too!

You can get the BCCD image from http://www.cs.uni.edu/~gray/bccd

Burn it, boot it, show off xmpi to people. That is what I do, in addition
to using it to host workshops on cluster computing education for PUI
faculty (primarilly undergraduate institutions). The lam example codes
are readilly available in the default user's home directory. make in
lam-mpi/examples builds them all.

The BCCD is a small (185-Meg, mini-CD sized) image that boots to a nice
clustering environment with mpicc/mpiCC/mpif77, lam, mpich, pvm, C3tools,
and all of the clustering glue you would need to change a lab full of XP
systems into a nice Linux cluster. A PPC version is in the works, too.

It runs from only the CD (read: safe for your current OS) and is intended
for clustering EDUCATION! -- so don't expect too much from your
benchmarking.

One caveat: the default configuration is mpich. If there's interest, I
can make an image with lam as the default image -- trivial to do. In the
meantime, prefixing your path with /lam-mpi/bin should be sufficient to
override the mpich flavors of mpicc, etc.

Poke it, prod it, stick one in your wallet, have fun...I'd welcome some
feedback.
