+1 on this. I was one of the LAM/MPI developers. We all moved, several years ago, to Open MPI (www.open-mpi.org). LAM/MPI is still available for use, but it's getting pretty stale. I predict it might start failing to compile on newer versions of Linux over the next year or three due to bit rot.
We encourage all LAM/MPI users to migrate to Open MPI when possible. Especially, if you're just starting out, you should start out in Open MPI -- not LAM/MPI.
