Normally, you would allow configure to choose default gnu compilers (gcc,
g++, and, on a very old system, g77), assuming that those are the
compilers you will use for your application. Your warning messages seem
to indicate that your "cc" is way out of date (much older than your lam
version).
I don't know whether openmpi is better able to deal with old compilers,
but it certainly does have a good reputation.
