It's usually better to use the wrapper compilers than to use gcc/g++
directly.

I can't remember if someone asked this already, but is there a reason
you're using LAM/MPI instead of Open MPI?

Per the LAM/MPI web site, LAM is in a maintenance mode -- all new work
is being done on Open MPI these days. FWIW, Open MPI has some
features that allow you to easily extract the flags that the wrapper
compilers pass to the underlying compilers if you want to use the
underlying compilers directly.
