Amos,
With normal system configuration, considered important by most
sysadmins, you're right, you need ./configure, or you will get "command
not found." If it works at all as quoted here, it won't make a
difference. I can imagine that OP didn't care to look for "command not
found" messages, so your point is good.
When I first saw your message on the Blackberry, I thought you were
referring to the way lam requires configuring in the source directory,
with no parallelism, as opposed to gnu standard, which requires
configuring into a clean directory, supporting parallel make and the like.
