conftest is the typical name for small programs compiled by tests
generated by the configure script. If the programs don't run, the
test results will be skewed (i.e., wrong).

If the LAM configure script is fit for cross compilation, then you can
avoid running execute tests by something like
  ./configure cross_compiling=yes

or by specifying --host and --build, with slightly different values.

I don't know whether LAM or OpenMPI may be cross-compiled. But also,
I don't understand the concept of firewalls that block code that is
already running on the build system anyway. But that may just be me.
