I'm actually trying to use R and in particular Rmpi (
http://www.stats.uwo.ca/faculty/yu/Rmpi/). On the Rmpi page I saw this
rather worrying statement:

"Under OpenMPI, R slaves will use 100% CPU time while waiting for master's
instructions. This is mainly caused by OpenMPI's blocking call
implementations. Under LAM or MPICH2, R slaves use 0% CPU time while
waiting. "

Which kind of killed my desire to try OpenMPI... Regardless I followed your
suggestion & moved to OpenMPI. Now everything works fine...

That shouldn't really happen. Can you send all the information listed
here:

Additionally, have you tried Open MPI instead of LAM/MPI? Open MPI is
where we're doing all of our work these days -- LAM is in a
maintenance status. You can consider Open MPI as a "next generation"
LAM/MPI -- many of LAM's ideas went into Open MPI.

Guys,

Probably a simple question, but I haven't been able to find the answer in
the installation guide...

I'm trying to compile/install LAM 7.1.4 on a 64 bit SuSE 9.3 box.

I configure it as:

./configure --prefix=XXX --disable-static --enable-shared --with-modules

However after make;make install I am left with no shared libraries! E.g. I
get libmpi.a and libmpi.la instead of libmpi.so

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers,

// Giuseppe
