Several RPIs are tried in the PingPong test so that users are exposed to
the performance implications of each. There have been nice examples
discussed in this list where the lamd rpi outperformed the tcp rpi
because of the asynchronous progress enabled by lamd.

WRT reduce, you don't need it to build MPI applications. You can stick
to "the basic six".

Again, reduce is tried in the PingPong just to have an idea about its
performance... not much to say with just 2 nodes, though.
