Noah,
I'm not very familiar with the Mac OS X installer package, but it's
easy enough to compile and install from source. You might try going
about it that way. Also, there's a shareware utility called Pacifist
that is very helpful for dealing with .pkg files. Check it out here:

Using that, you can see where it wants to put the packages, and you
might be able to force it to install.
