I've used LAM/MPI under Gentoo for quite a while without real problems. You
could get a fairly stripped down environment there if you wanted to be
aggressive with pruning. Or you might want to look into one of the boot CD/DVD
distros like Quantian or ClusterKnoppix. They are mostly into making OpenMosix
clusters out of the box, but it's worth a look. If you are willing to go a
little further into self-support, Damn Small Linux allows you to install gcc and
make. You probably wouldn't get java and fortran support, but you probably
could build a basic lam/mpi setup into that. Performance probably wouldn't be
much worth writing home about, but a virtual cluster isn't going to make the
top500 anyway.
