Ah, but it restores it at the end as well.
If you issue the macros in this order:
AC_PROG_CC
AC_PROG_LIBTOOL
ACX_MPI(...)
then I think you should not see CC=$MPICC unless you issue that
yourself. (Disclaimer: I'm using version 1.4 of that macro file.)
