LAM will never support THREAD_MULTIPLE.
LAM is effectively in maintenance mode -- 99% of our current effort is on
Open MPI these days. As such, we're trying to maintain critical bug fixes
for LAM, but are encouraging users to switch to Open MPI.
Open MPI has designed-in support for THREAD_MULTIPLE, but we have not
debugged/hardened it yet. Simple threaded programs may work, but
complex/subtle threaded MPI applications will likely fail.
