Yes, I've seen it. But in my situation this option fails on two points:
a) It requires just-in-time mangling of files to tweak the login
environment, like you suggest. In that respect it is no different from
modifying .bashrc.
b) it is up to the site administrators to permit the use of
.ssh/environment (option PermitUserEnvironment). In grid computing, with
hundreds of different sites (and policies) that is almost guaranteed to
fail _somewhere_.

Yes, it's a very technical issue. It wouldn't be so tough if I had just
one version of mpi!
