I haven't tried directly calling fork/exec to start mpirun in a
while, but it should work just fine (after all, that's basically at
the heart of what the shell does to start mpirun). Are you sure
mpirun is starting? Are you doing anything special with the file
descriptors (so that error messages might get lost?). I would
recommend double checking that mpirun is starting properly, then try
to follow where mpirun hangs or dies. That should help in figuring
out where your application is failing.
