It appears that the linker that links the dynamic libraries is not
very flexible as far as searching for dynamic libraries is
concerned.. I could solve my problem by using mpicc as compiler and
not specifying any -L or -I directories. My program is very simple
though, it just involved two files, so I just did

mpicc -c mpi_test.c

mpicc -c mpi_functions.c

mpicc -o mpi_test.o mpi_functions.o

that worked for me...
