Something is definitely not right. I've just tried the very same program on
a single-node configuration running SuSE 9.3 and LAM 7.1.1 and it worked
like a charm. I'll do some further digging, then will post my findings.

If you want, I can take a quick look at the PHP code generating the .php
pages for messages. This really should be a one-liner of a fix.
