Correct. This data point came [mainly] from me from my [admittedly
informal] list of LAM users -- I asked a bunch of people how they
installed LAM. The overwhelming answer was "from source", but there
were probably a *lot* of people who didn't say anything at all.

It goes back to what Brian said -- the LAM Team doesn't have the time or
resources to dedicate to making RPM's for all possible platforms,
distributions, and driver combinations. So the compromise was to offer
a tarball for those who prefer to install via source and a SRPM (which
is basically a tarball + some build instructions).

The SRPM allows those who prefer to install via RPM to easily build an
RPM for their platform / distribution / driver stack and then easily
install / uninstall it across all their nodes.
