Fast answer:
1)No, 2)Yes

Longer answer:
In order to run MPI programs with LAM on different hosts you just need that the
hosts be reachable by ssh or rsh from one of them and have the same version of
LAM-MPI installed. It is also advisable, to simplify the things, that the
username used to start MPI processes is the same on all the hosts and their home
directory is shared through nfs, but in principle this is not required.
