Just a note to clarify this: ARMCI[1] can be configured to use MPI
only for the start-up and shutdown phases, therefore getting the
processes started on the nodes via lamd/mpirun, while doing the actual
data communication via its own routines which do not use MPI calls,
but direct TCP/IP, GM, etc. calls.
