As a first step, could you try the lamtests for 7.1.2b31? We've
applied a small number of fixes here and there, and I have a dim
recollection of some fixes in the intercommunicator tests. The
lamtests 7.1.2b31 tarball is available here:

FWIW, we've done BLCR testing on AMD64 machines running RHEL4U2 with
LAM 7.1.2b31, and it seems to work ok.
