If possible, do NOT use mpe from mpich-1.2.7p1 for LAM. The MPE in
mpich-1.2.7p1 is old, i.e. it has been in maintenance mode for couple
years. Instead you should download mpe2.tar.gz (mpe2-1.0.3) from
http://www.mcs.anl.gov/perfvis. MPE2 contains new features that are
not available in old MPE. Follows the instruction in mpe2/INSTALL
to configure MPE for LAM. More detailed info can be found in the
mpe2/README. For instance, new wrapper scripts like mpecc/mpefc that
provides a unified development environment for MPI users,
"mpecc -mpilog" allows you to link your LAM/MPI apps with MPE2's logging
libraries.

Also, you may want to use the latest beta for lam7.1.2 instead of
lam7.1.1. I last tested mpe2 with lam7.1.2b24.

In terms of installation of LAM and MPE2

1, install LAM as usual. Be sure to know what C and Fortran compilers are
   used to configure LAM.
2, configure MPE2 by setting
   CC="C compiler used to configure LAM"
   F77="F compiler used to configure LAM"
   MPI_CC=<path_to_LAM/MPI>/bin/mpicc
   MPI_F77=<path_to_LAM/MPI>/bin/mpif77.....
   Then do "make" and "make install" as shown in mpe2/INSTALL
