Yes, 6.5.9 has some vestiges of traditional syntax pre-dating the
current standard. You may have noticed that these newer distros often
include lam 7.0.6. 7.0.3 works fine, in my experience, but older than
that invites problems. Unless you are serious about attempting to
support an OS older than RH9 with the same binary, I would not be
motivated to tackle those problem.
Particularly if you are using the latest gcc (4.2), which none of my
colleagues would use to tackle MPI, 20 year old syntax is a misfit.
Current released gcc (4.0.x) is enough of a challenge.
