Sorry about the slow reply - the entire LAM team was at the SC'05
conference last week, so we're just starting to dig out. Anyway,
we've been unable to replicate your problem on any of our OS X boxes
(including 10.4.3 machines with XCode 2.2). I know that Fink used to
do weird things with tarballs when building - can you send your Fink
info file and I'll see if I can replicate your issue using that.
