g95 also works well with LAM and is free. The binary installation is
straightforward and it plays nicely with the various 3.3/3.4/4.0 gcc
suites. The site has very good documentation. Don't build from source
unless you absolutely have to, the binaries are your best bet.

If you do go with gfortran, get the 4.0.1 version, not 4.0.0.
