You were right. The fix was run the following command first.
# ulimit -s unlimited
That got rid of the " f95: Insufficient system swap space" errors.

I think that this is your problem. Try increasing your swap space
and/or other configuration such that arbitrary Fortran applications can
be compiled; then LAM's test should be able to pass and configure
should finish.
