it's more a general networking problem I think.

try using the default MTU on both cards - just leave it unspecified and
it'll be 1500. some cards and switched and drivers deal badly with
non-default MTUs.

test your networking with something like netpipe -
  http://www.scl.ameslab.gov/netpipe/

once that's all ok and getting <64 micro-second latency and 900Mbit-ish
bandwidth with no hangs, then try your MPI app again.
