Debian has lam packaged in binary format , why don't you apt-get it ?
Also are you sure you've done all the steps correctly ? if you
install from source, does it compile fine and install the binaries
correctly ?
Assuming you have installed everything right, then run
# updatedb #as root
$ locate what_you_want_to_find
it will return something like
/where/you/install/filename
you can then run it by
$ sh /where/you/install/filename
