I think that the purpose was to detect SGE and avoid running several
jobs on the same machine with the same session name. This can also be
done manually in the SGE batch script, with something like (for (t)csh):
setenv LAM_MPI_SESSION_SUFFIX sge-${JOBID}-${SGE_TASK_ID}
before lamboot and should have the same effect.
