Yes. Any (non-IMPI) MPI process can call MPI_COMM_CONNECT or
MPI_COMM_ACCEPT -- it doesn't matter which node they are running on in
your LAM universe.

For details on how to place specific processes on specific nodes, see
the LAM/MPI User Guide and/or the mpirun(1) man page.
