What is the correct name for the lam operating mode
where one defines a comm universe via lamboot, and then
uses a subset of the defined universe to run jobs without
running lamboot?

My own term is "Persistent lamd mode", but perhaps
there is a canonical name for this? I am intending to
write an article on low latency batch processing with
lam for the MPI Wiki (see http://www.mpi-comm-world.org/).
