It sounds like you want to use a profiling tool. XMPI for LAM works
reasonably well, but it not being maintained (i.e., support is
limited). The MPE library from Argonne also works with LAM/MPI and can
be used to dump out data from an MPI application run, and viewed with
the jumpshot data viewer.
