We are using a setup exactly like this without problems.

What is your krb5 implementation? And the OS?

Guess: Perhaps lamboot invokes ssh without (for any strange reason)
having KRB5CCNAME pointing to a valid krb5 ticket file.

Try (assuming bash):

export KRB5CCNAME=/tmp/krb5cc_<your userid>
kinit
lamboot <options>

--
