I think that my previous comments say it all. :-)

Probably the best way to do it is to write your own function to write
out all your critical state to a file that can later be used to
manually restart the process (i.e., write a corresponding function to
read in that file and jump to the right place in your process).
This is manual, cumbersome, and a pain, but it's probably your best
option. :-\
