We run lam all the time on dual Xeon single node. I don't know whether
mandrake 10.1 implies a 2.6 kernel which has a chance of scheduling well
with HyperThreading. That's only one of the hurdles involved in making HT
support 4 processes effectively. It will work, but maybe not as well as 2
processes would with HT disabled.
