"LAM can use a lot of different remote starter agents: rsh and ssh are
two of the more common ones. LAM cannot use telnet. See the user
documentation about the boot SSI modules for more information."
Also, I think you're confusing communication protocol with startup
protocol. telnet / ssh are used for starting remote processes, not
communicating between processes on different nodes. LAM uses TCP
sockets to communicate between lamboot and the remotely-started
processes.
