FWIW, you shouldn't need root access to try it. You should, for
example, be able to build LAM with a --prefix under your $HOME (I do it
all the time -- it's my normal mode of development). Then just set
your PATH in your shell startup files (e.g., .bashrc, .cshrc, etc.) and
you should be good to go.
