Warner gave pretty good answers. :-)

You might also want to look in the LAM/MPI User's Guide for information
about the TCP and GM RPI modules. Generally, unless specifically told
otherwise by the user (or sysadmin), the GM RPI will be chosen over the
TCP RPI.
