LAM compiles without any problems for me on x86_64 and ia64. I've been
using lam-7.0.4 on Athlon64, 1G ram, 64bit Fedora Core 2, gcc for a while.

The source and binary rpms are here:
  http://www.cita.utoronto.ca/~rjh/lam/
a build log is in that dir also if you are interested.

I just tried it again with 7.0.6 and that builds ok too.
I needed the same one-line change to the .spec file as for the 7.0.4
build... patch is attached.

7.0.4 and 7.0.6 was also built on an quad Itanium 1 ia64 RHEL AS3 (update 2)
system (with 64G ram if that's relevant) from the same source rpm.
binary ia64 rpms are at the above URL too.

I haven't tried installing or using that ia64 rpm or any of the 7.0.6
rpms, so caveat emptor, but I don't see why they wouldn't work.

As you seem to be having traumas on multiple OS's I'd suggest it's some
weird environment variable or screwy path that you have set in a dotfile
that's causing your problems.

AFAICT LAM itself is fine.
Hope that helps.

cheers,
robin
