How's that? Fortran is Fortran, presumably even when using xlf.

Pardon my ignorance again, but I build lam by configuring --with-fc to the
compiler of my choice. Then, build scripts which employ mpif90 work with a
symlink which makes mpif77 appear also as mpif90. If you want mpif90 to
pass different options than mpif77, that should be easy enough.
