I suspect Tim was talking about IBM's standard MPI library that come with
their POE (Parallel Operating Environment). This has native support for
their proprietary switches (Colony, Federation), but it doesn't support the
main features of MPI-2 (SPAWN etc..). So users who want these features have
to install an implementation (such as LAM/MPICH) that does. But in turn
these don't have native support for the IBM interconnects and have to use
TCP/IP instead.
