What kind of GigE NICs are in the nodes?
I've seen horribly slow performance (worse than 10 Mbit) from
the r8169 GigE driver in kernel versions from 2003. There have
been LOTS of fixes and updates to that driver in more recent
2.6.x kernels (and in 2.4.2x), so you may try upgrading your
kernel if you are using that driver. Or switch to a different
model of NIC.

You can also reduce the runtime of the lamtests by selecting
only the RPI module(s) that you intend to use, probably TCP
in your case. See the lamtests README for how to do that.
