Why not? Does something fail when you configure LAM for the workstation
clusters?

Yes, LAM can run on SMP systems. See the FAQ for some tips on this.
But you might want to find out first if you'll enrage your system
administrator before you take up all the available CPU cycles on a server
that provides services to lots of thin clients... :-)
