I'm not sure what you mean by "in the foreground"...?

LAM's mpirun command will run MPI processes on each machine. Do you want
to lock others out (so to speak) while you are using the machines that
your MPI application is running on? If so, you might want to investigate
a batch queueing system such as SLURM, Torque, or PBS (or one of many
others).
