Yes, it should. At least for 2.2.x Kernels M-VIA offers a module (device
driver).

No experience with gigabit ethernet but our test cluster had a 100 Mbit
switched ethernet network.

No, the advantage of VIA is at all to manage communication without disturbing
the kernel. That's why it is faster then TCP/IP
