Found it. I won't bore you with how I finally figured it out. The
problem is in romio/Makefile. Line 5 is:
MAKE = make
I commented it out, and the build runs fine. That line was causing the
make to use the version of make that comes with Tru64 Unix, and that
version of make knows very little about gmake options or any other
behavior. It was the make that was complaining about -w.
We have installed gmake separately and use it exclusively, but
'/bin/make' is still there. Ordinarily, $(MAKE) will use the command
you used originally, but the bogus line in romio/Makefile was resetting it.
I don't know why that line is in romio/Makefile. I don't see any reason
for it.
