We haven't changed the logic for default installation directory since
sometime in the 6.5.x series.

LAM/MPI installs into /usr/local unless a previous install of LAM/MPI
is found, in which case it will default to installing over the previous
installation (this seems to be the expected behavior for Autoconf-using
projects). Of course, you can override the installation directory by
using the --prefix=<dir> argument to configure.
I'm not sure how 7.0.4 installed into /usr/local/lam-mpi. That was
never a default installation location for LAM/MPI. Perhaps there was a
previous installation prior to the installation of that 7.0.4 build?
