Sidenote / manadtory plug: is there any chance that you can upgrade to a
later version of LAM/MPI? I realize that not all users can, but the 7.x
series offers much greater flexbility and performance then 6.5.9.

You diagnosed the problem correctly -- for some reason, hboot is not being
found on the remote node even though your interactive logins show that the
PATH is correct.

I suspect a "dot" file problem, where you are setting the PATH in files
that are not normally processed (or parts that are not processed). Check
out the LAM FAQ -- it talks about shells and files that are processed,
etc. Note, especially that there is a difference between interactive and
non-interactive logins (and that's the problem that I suspect that you are
seeing -- the PATH is not set properly for non-interactive logins).
