This is a known problem with the built-in configure test (but only for
some compilers), and there's unfortunately nothing that we can do about
it. :-(
There is, however, a workaround.
Check out page 38 of the installation manual; it talks about exactly this
problem. The solution is essentially to set the FLIBS environment
variable with exactly the contents of the test, but without any syntax
errors (e.g., minus the spurrious "). And then run configure again.
