Atlas is pretty slow. The best combination we found (for P4 Xeon) was
the Intel BLAS libraries from MKL combined with this dgemm routine:

as others have pointed out a newer LAM is better, and also be sure to
use the -O option to mpirun (if you aren't running cross-architecture).
