Actually, this example is correct as shown. Note that the comment lines
above the example say:

# Set the desired C, C++, and Fortran compilers, unless using the GNU
# compilers is sufficient (this example assumes a Bourne-like shell)

Hence, the example is specifically to show how *not* to use the GNU
compilers. :-)
